In der Fernsehtechnik ist es üblich, eine gemeinsonne Antenne zur Ausstrahlung von Bild- und Tonenergie zu verwenden. Die Zusammenschaltung des Bild- und Tonsenders macht Entkopplungselemente notwendig, sogenannte Filterweichen oder Brückenweichen. Die Brückenweiche zeichnet sich durch besonders einfachen Aufbau aus, erfordert jedoch Antennensysteme mit 2 elektrisch identischen, hinreichend entkoppelten Eingängen. Diese Bedingungen werden von den nachstehend beschriebenen Schmetterlingsantennen erfüllt. Es handelt sich dabei um senkrecht zueinander angeordnete Strahler, die zur Erzielung eines Rundstrahl-diagramms mit einer Phasendifferenz von 90⁰ eingespeist werden.
Zur Erzielung einer günstigen und breitbandigen Anpassung finden Flächenstrahler Verwendung. Die Speisekabel von je 2 gegenüberliegenden Gruppen sind zusammengefasst, es können also OW und NS Strahlergruppe getrennt gespeist werden. Die zur Funktion der Antenne nötige Phasenverschiebung wird normalerweise durch eine geeignete Längendifferenz der von der Antenne zur Brückenweiche führenden Speisekabel erzielt.
Die Antennen sind zum Anschluss an zwei 60-Ohm-Kabel vorgesehen, werden jedoch auch mit einem Anschluss geliefert, Auf Wunsch werden sie auch für andere Wellenwiderstände ausgelegt. Für Gleichspannungen, elektrische Aufladungen und Blitzeinschläge sind sämtliche Teile einschließlich der Strahlerelemente galvanisch geerdet und bieten somit einen äußerst wirksamen Schutz gegen störende Einwirkungen dieser Art.
